Pele Launches Search For African Soccer Talent

by Off The BASN Sports Wire,
POSTED: Apr 20, 2007

DOHA - Qatar's Aspire Academy on Wednesday announced a wide-ranging programme to identify and train top footballing talent from seven African countries. "Aspire Africa. Football Dreams" was unveiled at a ceremony in the Qatari capital attended by legendary Brazilian star Pele. Starting in late May, a staff will screen more than 500,000 boys born in 1994 in seven different countries -- Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa.

In the first phase, the best 50 players from each country, identified in the selection process, will go for a week of trials in the capital city of their respective nations. The top three from each country will then go to the Aspire academy in Doha for four weeks of trials and testing. Following a period of assessment and discussions with the families, the most talented players will be enrolled into the Academy.

Andreas Bleicher, Sports Director at Aspire Andreas Bleicher said: "This is an incredible opportunity for talented young African boys to reach the heights of international football in the future. "Everyone in football is aware of the significant talent that exists in Africa, and also of the challenges that can prevent this talent reaching its full potential." The state-of-the-art Aspire Academy is the largest indoor sports arena in the world. Its main aim is to identify, educate and train talented athletes to compete in professional sports at the highest levels.

Releasing SportandTalent.com

For several purposes, i've decided to launch personal soccer website beside this public website aka blogspot. Picking up old template from previous satellite site, editing here and there, building keyword etc.. and here we go:

http://www.sportandtalent.com
Yes, the pages are only 2, for now. Just the index and soccer-shooting-ball. But i plan to add at least 2 subpages everyday until it gets really "fat".

Why soccer?
Well, i found soccer as a unique sport, or hobby. 1 ball with lots of magic. That 1 ball is able to unite countries. I see many successful football player, like the infamous Pele, charming Ronaldinho and trensetter Beckham. From no one to someone.

How many of us want to be succeeded in one thing that we like most? Our hobby. Kids and adults enjoy playing it, whether in spare time or specific moment. I see children happily riding bike together to their football course and get sweat in the field. They wear their club outfit. They pin their soccer star pictures on the wall. They watched football season, local and international league seriously. They want to be a professional soccer player, like their idol.

From there, i choose to have website that speaks about sport in general, soccer in specific, together with talent to pursue the dream.

SHOOTING A BALL

Shooting Drills

1) Have a forward post up on the top of the box and form about twenty feet away of shooters. Have them play the ball into the forward, who lays the ball off to the right or left for his or her teammates to take a first time shot on goal. Then have the line move to the side, so you're hitting the ball with the inside and outside of your feet (both right and left) and move the line accordingly.
2) Line players up along the side of the goal and then form another line at the top of the box. The players along the side of the goal play the ball with pace to the players at the top of the box, who then have three touches to get a shot off before the charging player closes them down.
3) Play combinations at the top of the box - overlaps, give and goes, and crosses that all lead to shots. Try to hit a moving ball and make the drills game-like.
4) Have a defender play the ball to the shooter from behind, about ten yards away from the shooter. Then, once the defender plays the ball to the shooter he or she closes (chases) down the shooter.
5) Throw ball into the shooter, difficult balls to control. Set limits on the number of touches the shooter can take before he or she gets a shot off.

The Various Ways to Strike the Ball

Instep - Use the top surface area of your shoe just before the laces begin. Do this when you want to strike the ball with power.
Side of the foot – Kick with the flat portion of your shoe. Turn your body to the right or left, depending upon which foot you are kicking with. This is used more for accuracy and placement. Pass the ball into the net. Strike the ball low and to the corners.
Outside of the foot - Use the outer surface of the front part of your foot (also referred to as "tres dedos" or “three toes” in Brazil). It’s best used to bend the ball and strike through the ball.

More Shooting Tips

  • Keep your knee and head over the ball.
  • Land on your shooting foot when shooting with power (follow through).
  • Strike the center of the ball and strike through the ball.
  • Keep your toes pointed and your ankle locked.
  • Strike with power or place the ball into the corners.
  • Keep your hips square to your target.

Keep Shooting

Don't stop shooting. You may miss the first four or five shots you take but have the sixth or seventh shot hit the back of the net. Concentrate on getting your shots on goal. Don't get discouraged if your first couple of shots don't go where you want them to go. Keep trying and don't lose focus. Look for chances and make something happen.
